Course Descriptions, 2010-2011
ART
Grades 9-12
Teacher: Mrs. Mary Schermerhorn
Fee: $90
Teacher will provide all materials.
Students observe demonstrations by the instructor and will use a wide variety of art materials. Materials include paints, printing inks, pen and ink, charcoals, pastels, and clay. They will develop skills in composition, design, drawing, painting, sculpture, and print making. We will study basic art principles and elements and art terminology.
Grades 5-8

This class will teach the elements of art: line, shape, color, texture, and value. We will use principles of design, repetition, rhythm, variety, contrast, balance, harmony and unity in our projects as well. We will paint, draw, and sculpt, using a fun and varied assortment of media.
Grade 1

This class will give students an introduction to art. We will use a variety of media and have fun learning about art.
CORE CLASS
Grades 9-12
Teacher: Mrs. Carol Burke
Fee: $110 per semester
This class will focus on Great Books, History, Literature, Speech, and Composition. Discussions will be based on Socratic Method and writing literary analyses will be required. Oral presentation will also be a requirement of the class. This year we will cover the modern period (1850 to the present). A book list will be available at registration. The class will be two hours long and students can expect to earn two high school credits upon satisfactory completion of this course.
Grades 5-8
Teacher: Mrs. Amy Richert
Fee: $100 per semester
This class will focus on History, Literature, Geography and do plenty of writing and composition. This year we will cover the modern time period (1850 to the present). Students will learn information organization, literary analysis, and writing skills while reading literature from the time period. Students will make a history notebook with outlines, maps, and timelines. This will be a two hour course (with breaks as needed).
Grades 1-4
Teacher: Mrs. Diana Kehoe
Fee: $75 per semester
The Core Class will study modern history (1850 to present) using The Story of the World as their main text, with supplementation. We will learn about history, geography, literature, and do narrations and memorization. This will be a 90 minute class, with break time included.
*Core classes at all levels will run on the four-year classical education cycle. Future years will cover Ancient History, Medieval History, and the Renaissance.

Text/materials needed: workbook for your grade (1st and 2nd grade will use the 1st grade workbook; 3rd/4th will use the 3rd grade book; 5th/6th will use the 5th grade book), Apostolate’s Family Catechism, the Bible, Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Description: This class is part of a complete curriculum. All religion classes 1st through 8th grade will continue to use this curriculum at Annunciation. The main text is the Apostolate’s Family Catechism, which is approved by both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI and serves to teach the student, the parent, and the teacher. This program uses a multi-media approach and draws from Sacred Scripture, Vatican II, papal documents, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and other theological resources, all in age-appropriate sequence.
Catholic Bible Timeline
Grades 9-12

Fee: $4 per class, there may be a copy/materials fee
We will use the Jeff Cavins Catholic Bible Timeline series.
SCIENCE
Biology
Grades 9-12
Teacher: Mrs. Christine Gustafson
Fee: $5 per week; plus a supply fee if necessary.
High school level biology course, including labwork.
*We will have a 3 year rotation of science courses in the future. The other two classes in the cycle will be Chemistry and Physics.
General Science
Grades 7-8
Teacher: Mrs. Christine Gustafson
Fee: $5 per week; plus a supply fee if necessary.
Seventh and Eighth graders will use the Apologia text Exploring Creation with General Science.
*Next year, we will use Aplogia's Exploring Creation with Physical Science. We will rotate between theses two texts every other year.
Zoology
Grades 5-6
Teacher: Mrs. Carol Burke
Fee: $25 for Winter/Spring semester 2011
Fifth and sixth graders will continue their study of Zoology using Apologia's Exploring Creation with Zoology 1: Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day. (Please note: if your child did not take this class in the 2009-2010 school year they are still welcome to take this class--there is NO prerequisite!)
Winter/Spring semester text: Apologia's Swimming Creatures of the Fifth Day: Exploring Creating with Zoology 2.
*In the future, we will also use Apologia's Exploring Creation with Zoology 2 and 3, Exploring Creation with Astronomy, and Exploring Creation with Botany.
Real Science 4 Kids,
