*These classes are NOT included in the membership fee. Costs for each class are included in the description. These fees will be paid directly to the teacher.
WRITING
Grades 4-5
Teacher: Carol Burke
Fee: $50 plus $10 copy fee

This will be a writing class for beginners based on Quick and Easy Essay Writing for Kids. First, we will work on writing complete sentences that can outline an entire essay. The next lessons will focus on getting more specific, looking at the big picture, and writing the perfect paragraph. Further lessons will include brainstorming, prewriting, and writing a complete essay. There will be no textbook for this class. Students will need a 2 inch binder with dividers, college ruled paper, and blank computer paper. Don’t worry about messy or slow handwriting. I will be patient with that. Students will be allowed to use a computer and type assignments. The teacher will provide weekly work on handouts, so they must be kept organized! We will spend time each week in class placing the work in the binders. We will try to work in topics based on what is being studied in core class.
Minimum: 4; Maximum: 8 students

Grades 6-8
Teacher: Carol Burke
Fee: $55 plus $10 copy fee

Junior High Composition will focus first on prewriting and then we will learn sentence composition and graduate to paragraph composition. We will be writing single paragraph formats for the following essay types: classification, definition, process, analogy, cause & effect, and comparison. Grammar and punctuation will be covered in the class through the use of Jensen’s Grammar and Punctuation. (No need to buy these texts, teacher will provide). This is academic writing and the focus is on practice! In second semester, we will move on to 5 paragraph essays following the same format types listed above. Students can expect to do about 3 hours of homework per week in this class, in addition to the hour in class time. An ability to type and access to a computer are beneficial, but not necessary. Poor handwriting should not keep you from considering this class.
Text: Jensen’s Format Writing, Revised. ISBN 1886061297.
Students will also need a 2 inch binder with dividers and college ruled paper plus computer paper. The class will have writing assignments due each week; sometimes they will need to be e-mailed to the teacher in mid-week. There will also be weekly quizzes based on reading material and/or grammar/punctuation assignments for the week. Expect about 3 1⁄2 hours of work outside of class per week.
Minimum: 4; Maximum: 12 students
Grades 9-12
Teacher: Carol Burke
Fee: $60 plus $10 copy fee

Senior high students will also use Jensen’s Format Writing as a guide, but will proceed quickly through single paragraph formats of these types: classification, definition, process, analogy, cause & effect, and comparison. Students will learn how to organize their writing with a simple seven sentence outline. Second semester will be spent writing four different 4-6 page research papers in which students will master research techniques and note-taking, writing a complex thesis, using a works cited page and in text citations, writing an annotated works citing, and using appendices. In addition to these writing lessons, students will also be writing book reports, resumes, business letters, and answers to essay type test questions (think ACT/SAT). There will NOT be a grammar or punctuation component of this class. We will deal with usage and mechanical issues as they present themselves in student writing.

SCIENCE
Physics
Grades 11-12
Teacher: Brandon Stoffregen

Fee: $75 per semester
Prerequisites: Algebra and Geometry
This course studies mechanics, vectors, heat, sound wave phenomena, electro- magnetic theory, electricity, relativity, and nuclear physics. Classical physics is combined with modern physics in both laboratory and lecture formats.

Chemistry
Grades 11-12
Teacher: Brandon Stoffregen

Fee: $75 per semester
Chemical and physical properties of matter are studied both in the laboratory and lecture. A very math based chemistry that helps determine how, why, and to what extent chemicals combine. The solving of related mathematical problems makes up one-third of the course.
Physical Science
Grades 8-10
Teacher: Brandon Stoffregen
