CLASSES 2014-2015


MEMBERSHIP CLASSES:

CORE 

*The core classes at all levels follow a four-year classical education cycle.  This year all core classes will study modern history (approximately 1850 to the present).  Future years will cover early modern, ancient, and medieval history.

Core Grades 9-12

Supply fee: $10 per semester

The class focuses on history, literature, and composition in the modern time period, approximately 1850 to the present.  Total class time will be 1 1/2 hours (class begins at 10:30, breaks for lunch at 11:30 and resumes at 12:00) It is understood students will sign up for that entire time, but parents should talk to Mrs. Burke if they have questions.  The first hour of class will focus on literature and history, with discussion being the primary mode of study within the class.  Students will be expected to read and write each week outside of class.  We will continue to use the Norton Anthology, but some selections will be free standing novels that students will be asked to procure from the library or elsewhere.  An assignment pack will be given at the beginning of each semester.  For Composition, we will be using The Lost Tools of Writing, a classically based writing instruction guide.  There are student workbooks for Vol. 1 and 2 that will be required.  These cost $39 each plus shipping and the teacher will order those after you register.  If you drop the class after the books are ordered, you will be expected to pay for the book, unless the teacher is able to return it.  The only other cost, besides a $10 per semester copy fee, will be the Norton Anthology.  Instructor will have that volume ISBN number available at registration.  Some assignments will be directed specifically towards 9-10th graders and some toward 11-12th.

Books: The Lost Tools of Writing student handbook Vol 1 (1st semester) and perhaps Vol 2 2nd semester.  It will depend on how far we get in Vol 1.  (These will be ordered by the teacher.)

Core Grades 6-8

We will study the modern era, 1850-present.  This course is a survey of world history, including a history text, readings from literature, and some geography study.  Students should expect to spend 45 minutes a day preparing for class and completing assignments.  Assignments will include reading, short essays, and longer research and writing assignments.  We will have some quizzes during class time as well.  Students will be required to read Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne during the summer.

STORYTIME

This class is based on the Five in a Row curriculum series, book one.  We will read stories and explore art, history, vocabulary, geography, science, and more.  A syllabus, book list, and supply list will be available at registration so parents can plan ahead and be prepared for weekly adventures.

Supervised outdoor activities for children.  As long as it is not raining or excessively cold, kids will go out, so in the winter bring warm clothes and boots!


RELIGION
Saints Club

This class will introduce your child to the many saints that are widely known and the not so famous.  We will talk about their virtues, stories, struggles, and their powerful intercession for us.  Will do crafts and play saint games.

First Communion Prep
Teacher: Amy Newburn
Grades: 1-2
Supply fee: $2 per semester
This class is for first and second graders preparing for First Communion in the spring or summer of 2015.  We will be using the 2nd grade curriculum from the Apostolate Family Catechism, "Consecration in Truth."  We will have discussions, demonstrations, charades, and art projects to help students lear the material to prepare for their First Holy Communion.  This class will be in conjunction with the Saints Club immediately before it and will often be linked in materials covered when discussion satins helping them to better understand their faith.

SCIENCE
Zoology: Swimming Creatures
Grades 5-6

We will be studying water animals.  We will cover the book in the fall semester.  Students will be responsible for reading the chapter and doing homework assignments.  They will do projects in class to help deepen their understanding of the material.

Zoology: Flying Creatures

This text teaches your child about the design and characteristics of flying creatures, including physical characteristics, nesting habits, flight patterns, and more!  A lesson will be covered in two weeks.  Your student will be required to read assigned pages, answer "What Do You Remember?" questions, fill out worksheets, and participate in fun experiments in class.

VOCABULARY
Roots Roundup
Grades 4 and up
Teacher: Colleen M. Schroepfer
Supply Fee: $12 per semester

We will be learning 100 roots, their meaning, and some vocabulary words for each root.  Learning the 50 Greek/50 Latin roots will hopefully give meaning to many words that students encounter in other subjects--i.e. science, math, history, and other languages.  No book is required for the class.  Homework will include memorization for quizzes.  There will be quizzes, tests, games, and competitions in class.


ELECTIVE CLASSES:
These classes are NOT included in the membership fee.  There is charge for each class that is paid directly to the teacher.
ART
Grades 9-12
Teacher: Mary Schermerhorn
Fee: $90 per semester
Teacher will provide all materials.
Students observe demonstrations by the instructor and will use a wide variety of art materials. Materials include paints, printing inks, pen and ink, charcoals, pastels, and clay. They will develop skills in composition, design, drawing, painting, sculpture, and print making. We will study basic art principles and elements and art terminology.


Grades 6-8
Teacher: Mary Schermerhorn
Fee: $90 per semester
Teacher will provide all materials.

This class will teach the elements of art: line, shape, color, texture, and value. We will use principles of design, repetition, rhythm, variety, contrast, balance, harmony and unity in our projects as well. We will paint, draw, and sculpt, using a fun and varied assortment of media.


MATH
Geometry
Requirements: A solid understanding of basic math concepts through successful completion of an Introductory or Pre-Algebra course. Algebra I completion is recommended.

Fee: $90 per semester (90 minute class) plus a $15 supply for answer key

Daily homework will be completed wtih parent grading and student corrections, contacting teacher as necessary for complete understanding.  Class periods will focus on new material to ensure adequate concept completion.  Possibility of home-parent administered tests.  This class will be 90 minutes long.

NOTE: There may be times when Geometry will need to meet an additional day per week. There will be an added charge for additional class days.  Any extra meeting days and their fees will be discussed with and agreed upon with parents.

Algebra I
Requirements: A solid understanding of basic math concepts through successful completion of Introductory or Pre-Algebra coursework

Fee: $90 per semester, meeting Fridays at Annunciation and one extra day during the week

Daily homework will be completed with parent grading and student corrections contacting teacher as necessary for complete understanding.  Class periods will focus on new material to ensure adequate concept coverage.  Possibly home test given by parents.  There will be an additional day for class to meet during the week.  This will be required and is included in the class fee.  Day and time will be agreed upon by instructor and parents.  Instructor will supply a readiness test after registration to ensure students have an adequate understanding of the basic math concepts required for this particular course.

Mrs. Brown has an engineering degree and worked in that field for 10 years prior to homeschooling.  She has taught math classes at Sacred Heart Classical Center and Annunciation Coop and has tutored for several years--homeschoolers as well as private and public school students--with great success.

SCIENCE
Junior High Earth Science
Grades 7-9
Teacher: Kris Rose
Fee: $50 per semester

This will be a challenging, in-depth science class for the 7-9th grader, studying Earth Science.  A few of the areas we will explore will be geology, meteorology, oceanography, astronomy, and more.  Students will be expected to complete two hours of reading a week as well as occasional sketches and graphs.  There will be a research paper due in the spring semester.

Mrs. Rose has been a teacher on and off since Annunciation began in 2003.  She has homeschooled her children for over 18 years and has 7 children ages 21-9.  She has a bachelor of science in occupational therapy and works PRN in Pediatrics at Rockford Health System.


Chemistry 
Grades 8-12
Teacher: Tia Johnson
Fee: $30 per semester

In this high school level class, students will develop an understanding of properties, changes, and interactions in matter and energy through study of chemical reactions and bonding.  Students will learn to design, execute, and defend experiments.  There will be weekly reading assignments and problem sets.  Some labs will be performed at home and some at coop.

CIVICS
American Government
Grade level: 9-12
Teacher: Amy Richert
Fee: $50 per semester

Description:  This class will study the founding documents of the United States, beginning with the Declaration of Independence.  We will also look at the Articles of Confederation.  Students will complete an in-depth study of the Constitution and Amendments.  Students will learn about the history of these documents and what influenced their writing, how our government was formed, and how it functions.  We will also study the constitution of the state of Illinois.  There will be homework every week--reading, short answer questions, some short essays; we will have quizzes and tests in class.  Students will take the Constitution test.

Note: This class is planned to run every two years at Annunciation.

Books: There is a book of selected readings for this course, the cost for the reader is $20.  Information on ordering will be sent to parents after registration (teacher may place a group order).  Internet access is required for this class.

Supplies: Spiral notebook or paper and pen for taking notes.


FOREIGN LANGUAGE
Spanish
Grade level: 7-12 (younger students may be able to take the class with permission of instructor)

Fee: $75 per semester

We will complete one chapter in the text book each week.  Students should expect to spend 30 minutes each day on homework--flashcards, handouts, and study guides.  Each class will begin with questions and answers, review, and a short quiz over what was studied at home the previous week.  Class time will also consist of grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary introduction, as well as oral practice with a partner or group.

CLASSICAL COMPOSITION
Below are the levels of the Classical Composition program as written by Memoria Press.  At Annunciation, we are in our second year of using the program, so at this time we are offering only the Fable and Narrative stages.  In the second semester of next year some students will move into the Chreia stage and the following year Maxim.  The program is designed to start at 4th grade in Fable, but is also appropriate for older children who are just starting the progression.  Annunciation will eventually be offering this Classical Composition program through 8th grade.  High school composition students will be using The Lost Tools of Writing, another classicall based writing curriculum that uses many of these same principles.

Classical Composition 1
Teacher: Carol Burke
Fee: None

The Fable Stage uses Aesop's Fables to teach skills in narration, paraphrasing, vocabulary, and using figures of description (literary devices) in writing.  This will be a 30 minute class with about 3 hours per week of outside work expected.  There is no copy fee for this class.  Grades will not assessed for this class, but parents are free to ask the teacher how his/her student is doing.

Book: Classical Composition Fable Stage (ISBN available at registration)

Classical Composition 2
Teacher: Carol Burke
Fee: $10 per semester

Narrative Stage beginning.  This class is designed for students who have finished the Fable Stage and are ready to move forward.  This class continues the skills begun in the Fable Stage and further expands narrative writing skill using Figures of Description.  This will be a 30 minute class with about 3 hours of outside class work assigned.  Grades will be assessed for this class.

Classical Composition 3
Teacher: Carol Burke
Fee: $10 per semester

Narrative Stage Part II.  This will be a continuation of the Narrative Stage for students who were in the class last year or students whom Mrs. Burke assesses to be at this level.  Grades will be assessed for this class.

Book: Classical Composition Narrative Stage (ISBN available at registration).  We may move into Classical Composition Chreia in the second semester.

IMPORTANT: Parent involvement at home is CRUCIAL to the success of this program.  We will be having a one hour training program for parents at the beginning of each semester.  Parents are always welcome to sit in class and observe.

It is possible that class fees may change before registration (membership fees will NOT change).  Please check back here periodically.  If there are changes they will be posted here as soon as possible.  The final costs will be posted at registration.

Most classes will have minumum and maximum enrollments.  Those will be noted on the registration forms for each class.

Tuition for all classes is due on the first day of class.  We do not require a deposit when you register for the class.  Most teachers are willing to take payments if you prefer to not pay the entire amount on the first day.  Please contact individual teachers about fees for their classes.

You are not obligated to take the core classes if you are attending the cooperative.

Membership fees:
1 student-$75/semester
2-4 students-$150/semester
5 or more students-$200/semester
There is a cleaning fee of $25 per family.
Elective fees:
Fees for elective courses are listed in the description. Tuition for these classes is payable directly to the teacher and is due the first day of classes each semester. If you decide to drop a course, you must notify the instructor no later than the second class. If you do not notify the instructor before or on the second class day, you are responsible for tuition for the entire semester.
If a student is only taking elective courses and NO membership classes, there is a $25 fee per student for registration and cleaning. This is in addition to any tuition due to teachers
