MATH

Algebra I

Teacher: Kristine Brown
Fee: $100 per semester

Daily homework will be completed by students and graded by parents.  Students should correct homework and contact teacher as necessary for complete understanding.  Class periods will focus on new material to ensure adequate concept coverage.  Home tests may be administered by parents.

Book: Merrill Algebra One, Foster, Rath, Winters (green book)
ISBN: 0-675-05596-2

You do not need a teacher guide or answer key.

*Class may meet an additional day during the week depending on needs of students.  A readiness test will be supplied before classes begin.

Algebra II
Requirements: A solid understanding of basic math concepts through successful completion of Algebra coursework
Teacher: Kristine Brown
Fee: $100 per semester

This is a thorough Algebra II course which will also include Trigonometry, as time allows.  We will focus on learning the concepts and where the numbers come from as well as what they mean so that students understand the concepts fully. Calculators may be used, as I allow, but we will not be using graphing calculators or programming in this course.  Students need to understand and use their brains, then calculators may assist later.

Coursework for grade calculation will be minimal.  Daily homework will be completed with parent grading and student corrections, contacting teacher as necessary for complete understanding.  Tests and reviews will be the main means of grade accumulation so homework understanding is of great importance.  I advise parents to monitor the homework and make sure that the students are understanding and asking questions when necessary.  Class periods will focus on new material to ensure adequate concept completion.  Possibility of home-parent administered tests.

Book: Merrill Algebra Two with Trigonometry, by Foster, Rath, Winters
 ISBN:  0-675-05616-0

*Class may meet an additional day during the week depending on needs of students.

*Class may meet an additional day during the week depending on needs of students.

Chemistry
Grades 9-12 Students should have basic Algebra background
Teacher:  Elizabeth (Liz) Drog
Fee: $100 per semester
Additional fees: $25 lab fee covers the entire year

This class is a 2 semester course designed to present a working knowledge of Chemistry so that the student will have a platform with which to pass SAT and ACT testing and to build a foundation for further study of the subject in College.  The material covered will satisfy state requirements for a laboratory science course which will reflect well on a high school transcript.
Students will finish with the necessary vocabulary, understanding of subatomic particles and knowledge of the periodic table.  They will understand the chemical bonds that create matter and be able to balance chemical equations.  Metals and nonmetals, solutions and colloids, chemical thermodynamics and kinetics will be explored. In addition we will cover electrochemistry, nuclear chemistry and an introduction to organic chemistry.  All of the information will be related to chemistry in everyday life.  The textbook chosen will present all of this as it relates to Creation and is Christian based.
The assigned chapters for the week will covered and discussed in class and homework will be assigned and is to be turned in the following week.  Testing will consist of occasional quizzes and longer tests that reflect the material presented.  Simple demonstrations will be presented in class, however there will be a few additional labs scheduled outside of class time that will allow for more hands-on experience.
I will give the students my email address and a phone number that they can use to contact me if they are having difficulty with any of the assigned material.  This will allow them to get help with homework before the next class.
Book: Chemistry: Precision & Design, Third Edition.  A Beka Books, 2013.  (Available from Christianbook.com for $48.10)
Minimum: 5 students

VOCABULARY
Roots Roundup
Grades 5-8
Teacher: Colleen M. Schroepfer
Supply Fee: $20

We will be learning 100 roots, their meaning, and some vocabulary words for each root.  Learning the Greek and Latin roots will hopefully give meaning to many words that students encounter in other subjects--i.e. science, math, history, and other languages.  No book is required for the class.  Homework will include memorization for quizzes.  There will be quizzes, tests, games, and competitions in class.

WRITING
Writing
Grades: 5-8
Teacher: Colleen Schroepfer
Fee: $20 per semester

This course will be geared to the beginning and intermediate writer.  We shall start with creating a well written sentence.  After that is mastered, we will learn what is necessary for writing a good paragraph.  Paragraphs will be in the contedxt of a letter.  The three basic elements of writing: content, style, and mechanics will be introduced and refined.  Basic grammar will be reviewed especially as it applied to writing.  Students can benefit from repeating this course because their maturity and  additional life experiences allow for fresh learning options.

Advanced Writing
Grades: 7-8
Teacher: Theresa Ambrose
Fee: $50 per semester

Andrew Pudewa's Excellence in Writing course will walk us through an easy approach to writing paragraphs and essays that when complete sound intellectual. There is a format that will be used throughout the whole year that will strengthen structure and give confidence with style. It is our hopes as home educators to cultivate a love for learning. This program does that with writing. I've been teaching this method in my home-school for 10 years and believe it to be an answer to prayer with  my limited experience in writing.
Maximum: 8 students

SECOND SEMESTER CLASS:

WORLD GEOGRAPHY
Grades: 9-12
Teacher: Amy Richert

This class will be a survey of world geography.  Students will learn geography skills (map reading), study physical geography and well as human geography (culture and heritage, social structures, etc.).  We will focus on location, place, human-environment interaction, movement (of people and information), and regions of the Earth.  There will be reading, discussion, quizzes, and a few hands-on projects.

*This class will run only in the second semester.
